Phigolf Golf Simulator Review
If you’re looking for an affordable, fun, and portable golf simulator, the Phigolf system is an excellent choice. As someone who enjoys golf and runs a virtual league, I’ve spent plenty of time using Phigolf and have seen both its strengths and areas for improvement.
Setup and Portability
One of the biggest advantages of Phigolf is how easy it is to set up. The sensor attaches to the included short swing stick (or your real club), and it connects via Bluetooth to your smartphone, tablet, or even a smart TV. There’s no need for large hitting nets or extensive space, making it ideal for indoor use. Whether you’re at home, traveling, or visiting friends, it’s simple to bring along.
Gameplay and Accuracy
Phigolf provides a solid golf simulation experience, though it’s best suited for casual players and those looking to improve their swing. The feedback on swing path, clubface angle, and tempo can be helpful for refining your mechanics. However, like most sensor-based systems, it does have limitations in ball flight accuracy. It’s excellent for practicing tempo and consistency but might not perfectly replicate real-life distances or spin.
One thing I appreciate is that when my swing feels off, the feedback from Phigolf often reflects that, reinforcing a strong connection between feel and results. I don’t believe Phigolf misreads club angles—rather, I think some users may not want to admit that their swing has occasional flaws , there may be times when the battery charge is low and there are issues but the players just don’t want to quit.
Course Selection and Game Modes
One of the standout features is the access to 38,000+ courses, including famous PGA Tour venues. You can play solo rounds, compete in online tournaments, or play head-to-head against others. The multiplayer modes, including pass-and-play and online matchups, make it a great social experience. The integration with E6 Connect adds even more realism and variety, though it can be a bit pricey.
On the World tour portion while the putting is functional, it still needs improvement, as most putts play flat rather than reflecting the actual slopes of the greens. That said, when setting up tournaments, at least everyone is playing on the same greens. Additionally, trees exist in the game but don’t provide any resistance, meaning there’s no real penalty for missing the fairway.
Community and Competition
A big highlight of Phigolf is the community aspect. I run a virtual golf league where players from around the world compete weekly, and the Phigolf platform makes it easy to track scores and engage with others. However, since Phigolf’s system only tracks the best scores, I use my own spreadsheets to manage league standings and maintain more detailed records. The addition of handicapped tournaments ensures fair competition for players of all skill levels. I also run a chat on my World Tour Phigolf Community page, where I can be relaxing one minute and having a match the next.
For short game practice, Phigolf makes it easier to chip in on a regular basis, which can be satisfying, though not always entirely realistic.
Distance Comparison
Phigolf’s driving distances are sometimes a point of debate. Personally, I know that the best drive I’ve ever had on a course, with the wind behind me, was about 278 yards, while I steadily hit 250 to 300 yards in Phigolf. However, my Arccos system has me averaging about 210 yards on the course. While Phigolf can be a bit generous with distances, it still provides a useful and enjoyable practice tool. Accuracy of the shape (slice/pull) can be seen in Phigolf and with some coaching online I can see the improvement in the game and on the real course so yeah it works.
Areas for Improvement
While Phigolf is great for fun and practice, there are a few areas that could be improved:
-
Putting Feel: Greens still need refinement to better represent slopes, as most putts currently play flat.
-
Tree Penalties: Trees offer no real resistance, meaning there’s no penalty for hitting into them.
-
Software Updates: Some users experience occasional connectivity issues or app crashes, though updates continue to improve performance.
Final Thoughts
For the price, Phigolf is a fantastic golf simulator for casual players, beginners, or those wanting to practice indoors without a costly launch monitor setup. It offers an engaging golf experience, an active online community, and great portability. While it may not replace high-end simulators for serious data analysis, it’s a fun and effective way to enjoy golf year-round.
